Fortress House is set to become a landmark cultural destination in Gibraltar, transforming a historic residence into a dynamic centre for art, learning, and community. The project introduces an art gallery, children’s art centre, and café within a design that blends heritage preservation with contemporary innovation.

The scheme integrates a historic building of significant cultural value, restoring original materials and architectural features to preserve Gibraltar’s heritage. Within these refurbished spaces, visitors will encounter modern amenities and immersive galleries that celebrate history while embracing the present. Complementing the old, a new building section is set back from Cathedral Square, reducing its impact at street level. Its distinctive double-skin façade draws inspiration from Fortress House’s existing features, while ceramic cladding reinterprets local colours and patterns in a contemporary language. A rooftop green space crowns the building, offering views across the town and towards the sea.

The visitor experience is conceived as a seamless blend of past and present. Flexible galleries, a dramatic double-height exhibition space, and dynamic cultural programming will foster exploration, dialogue, and collaboration. The children’s art centre will further strengthen community connections through workshops, talks, and educational partnerships with local schools.

Designed to move towards nearly Zero Energy Building standards, the project incorporates green roofs, solar panels, solar water heating, and advanced daylighting systems. Fortress House embodies Gibraltar’s rich cultural identity while championing sustainability and establishing a museum that is authentic, inclusive, and future-facing.
