Fortress House

With galleries, a rooftop sculpture garden, two cafés and an arts education centre, Fortress House offers visitors the opportunity to reflect, learn, create and connect.

Fortress House’s architecture will reinvigorate the historical Georgian building through sustainable design and adaptive reuse with contemporary additions, preserving traditional features such as rhombus tiling and grand fireplaces. The museum will have multiple entrances to ensure visibility and accessibility for all.

With 1700 square metres of gallery space occupying the top three floors of the building, Fortress House will have capacity to accommodate ambitious exhibitions with space for large-scale works. Each gallery is designed with state-of-the-art conservation conditions and lighting systems, four-metre-high ceilings, and large volumes. The northwest gallery room on the first floor will especially stand out, with a dramatic double height space intended for the display of monumental installations.

The rooftop of the building will continue the displays of art throughout the building, complete with a sculpture garden and terrace. The garden will have open views of the local scenery. Additionally, the garden will also act as a connecting link to Gibraltar’s “Green Lung”, contributing to the government’s climate change strategy to produce more green spaces to reduce air pollution in the local environment.
